Diana Cohen, 'Falda' (2005)

In creating my sculptural  piece, 'Hanging Baggage' I was immediately inspired by the work of Diana Cohen, particularly her piece 'Falda'. This sculptural plastic piece, in whcih the bags were sown together using organic thread, allowed for an almost tapestry-like effect. Cohen states that, 'having worked with the plastic bag as my primary material for the past twenty years, all of the obvious references to recycling, first-world culture, class, high and low art give way to an almost formal process which reflects the unique flexibility of the medium.'[1] Indeed, I liked the secondary materiality of the work, and how the unique material was embraced by the artist as a work of it's own, rather than simply an alternative canvas to be used.
